應該不只是 file server 而已。

從規格上看，Apple 有支援 Fiber Gigabit 這種介面來看，多部 XServe 串成 Cluster 來用是很有可能的。不過這需要作業系統支援，所以應該只有 Apple 知道詳情。

42 部 XServe，84 顆 G4 串成的 Cluster 運算上也是威力十足吧。用在 Web server 上可以做 load balance 分攤工作；科學運算上將可以有超級電腦的能力。

看你要怎麼算，算什麼而定。
基本的 MPICH, PBS 等等早早就移殖成功了, cluster 運作不是問題, 管理上前面好像有說 compaq 的工具有移殖計畫云云....

我起踍才會去買這麼貴的東西, but 話說回來 sgi linux server 也是貴得不像話。

這種東西（Cluster）本來就不是給個人用的，而是那些可以大聲說「錢不是問題」的單位買的。

「根據蘋果的說法，Xserve 是針對教育以及專業設計這兩個 Mac 佔有率很高的市場所設計」所以想知道這麼一台或多台串連起來時要怎麼提供給設計人員更高的運算，科學運算o.k.，那現行的設計軟體恐怕不是那麼容易的吧？！

根據我的瞭解，教育是指高等教育研究單位（顯而易見），專業設計就是 Hollywood 的電影工業。因為這幾年 Hollywood 對於數位電影的需求與日俱增，急需要運算能力強的叢集電腦幫他們節省製作特效與立体動畫的時間。

連 rack mount 這種設計，也是 Steve Jobs 在與 Hollywood 專業人士溝通後所得到的意見。

看來 Apple 即將拿下這片肥沃的市場。

我本來就是指.. 研究用啊 [img]images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]
anyway, 手上有十數個 nodes, 手工打造, 造價低賤....

In some cases, home-made boxes really show the low price tag, but it doesn't provide the support as needed. The reason why enterprises are always going for the brand names even they are generally more expensive is because of the support. Even they have a bunch of in-house support staff, but when bad things happen, they always want the vendors to provide solutions. That's probably one of the reasons for Linux vendors, like Red Hat to start their support initiative. That's only way that you can persuade the enterprises (the major buyers) to use your platform. This factor may not be so obvious to the end users though.

Yeah... I think Tim Cook said that in the Xserve press conference. You guy should check out the QT video.

不是小弟要潑冷水，但是 Mac 上與學術研究相關的軟體真的很少，像我們公司所用的幾套 CAE 軟體(MARC MAGMA TASCflow)，都沒有 Mac 版的。就連小弟工作上用的 Pro/ENGINEER 也沒有 Mac 版的！(不過 Pro/ENGINEER 有 Unix 版，希望有一天會出現 Mac 版)

這台機器不是可以做叢集運算麼.那應該不一定要做伺服器吧!
但有多少軟體支援是否會變成另一個問題.
但話說回來.若仿造好萊塢大廠製作3D動畫的經驗來看.
軟體似乎不成問題.就像迪士尼一樣有自己專屬程式的軟體一般吧.或許在這台電腦上.蘋果打算提供的就是一個完美的運算平台或伺服管理平台吧!
雖然我也並不了解這些高階市場上多了蘋果之後將來會便怎樣.因為....那和我真的是太遙遠了.

我想還早吧，現在好萊塢特效電影幾乎是SGI的天下，SGI在這個市場能跟它競爭的也沒幾家，豈是APPLE說拿就拿.... [img]images/smiles/icon_mad.gif[/img] (現在電影算圖是用這東東...)
