is my ipod dying!?

Hi, all, i met a serious problem with my 4th generation iPod 20GB and i hope there's someone who can tell me what's wrong because i really need a hand.
The iPod can't be recongnized (neither PC nor Mac) and an error message shows up when iTunes opens. The error message says my iPod is corrupted and has to be restored to orginal setting...blah blah... Last time i met this problem, i just pressed "Enter" button and "Manu" button to reset iPod. Everything was going fine after that. i can transfer MP3 to my iPod and playing MP3 as usual. Until recently, the iPod become stranger. The same problem happened and it's not helpful after resetting the iPod by pressing "Enter" and "Manu" button. There are some symptom like below:
1. The error message still shows up sometimes, but sometimes nothing happened when i plug iPod to a PC or Mac and open iTunes 7.
2. iTunes and iPod halts during the mp3 trasferring. i have to unplug the ipod from PC (or Mac) directly without "Safely Remove Hardware" or "Enject" button.
Until now Ihave got some trials with:
1. Reset iPod by pressing "Enter" and "Manu" button. It seems not to work.
2. Take the suggestion that from iTunes: Restore to the orginal setting by latest iTunes. Therefore my iPod has no MP3 after restoring setting... ><
I thought the HDD of iPod has been damaged. However the MP3 still can be played after i transfered a few MP3 into iPod. I'm a bit confused right now. If the HDD is not available, the MP3 files should be available also, but it's not! Now the iTunes and iPod still halts during the mp3 trasferring sometimes... is it worth fixing iPod in a Apple store? or it's the only and the last way that i can do for this issue? i hope there's someone who has the similar experience with it and kindly inform me what to do.
