Hi, Boss, do you personally play DC? Can you suggest an inexpensive model for a novice and an intermediate? (Firewire, DC, and LCD)

S1-X falls into intermediate (may be professional in certain extent~~)
Forget anything about FW at the moment for low-cost DCs.

Before talking about any model, I suggest you to go to
http://guide.apple.com/uscategories/firewire.lasso
to see the compatibility list first. Though in general cases, most DVs will work with iMovies/FW Macs, there are some exceptions.
