2.Smart Set
6.Universal Binary,Intel Mac

Since its 1.0fc2 release, I have distributed this product to my current clients asking them to try it. With in weeks, all had abandoned Extensis Suitcase X1 or other font management software in favor of Linotype Font Explorer.

This is the only font manager that I have tested that correctly works with network home directories (e.g., those stored on an automounted AFP volume hosted by Mac OS X Server). For a production environment, this application is a must-have.

I have tested the application on systems ranging from an iBook (G3, 900MHz) to a Power Mac G5. The application outperforms its competition: On a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver) [Mac OS X 10.4, Adobe CS2, 512MB RAM], the application remains stable in loading nearly 3000 typefaces, with only a brief delay during its initial load.

Most font issues can be resolved ahead of time, if you start with a clean management system in this way:
(1) Scan, repair, and organize your existing fonts (especially those old PostScript Pair fonts) using Morrison SoftDesign's FontDoctor X (7.1.1 current).
(2) Empty your (user domain) ~/Library/Fonts folder; do so for other users, too. Add your fonts to your organized collection as per the first tip. Make sure that you haven't removed or replaced any fonts in either the System domain [/System/Library/Fonts] or local (Computer/All Users) domain [/Library/Fonts]. When launching FontExplorer X for the first time, tell it "don't manage fonts" - this leaves the System and local domains alone. Then, place your organized collection in /Users/Shared and add it to the Library in Font Explorer.
(3) For server situations, place the organized font library in an automounted AFP volume for quick access to your clients.
(4) After adding your organized collection to FontExplorer, quit all applications and use its Clean Application Caches and Clean Font Caches commands from the Tools menu (authentication & reboot required).
(5) Periodically, you may have difficulty with QuarkXPress 6.5 as its font menu may not update from time to time. Repeat tip four if this happens, or simply move to InDesign.
