mail quits unexpectedly

我的一個朋友，最近回澳洲去了，結果昨天接到他的電話，說他的mail無法開啟，大致的情況是這樣子的，他打開mail時出現要他import及 upgrade的訊息，但當他按continue後，則出現“mail quit unexpectedly", 然後mail就自己關閉了。

因為他在電話裡描述的我不太清楚，所以我請他mail給我，以下是他的mail內容。

basically when i click on mail icon normally it goes to my mail accounts but now it
wont go there and pop up say welcome to tiger mail, in order to use MAIL i have to import
my messages and upgrade , but when i click on continue , another pop up comes and say
mail quit unexpectedly , reopen but i reopen and it still does same thing,

how do i recover my mails i have sent and received, maybe i need to re install mail accounts again
but i need my all my emails i have sent and received

不曉得這是什麼情形，我爬了文，有人是因為在mail上裝了plug-ins，mail才出問題的，但我想他對電腦不熟悉，應該不會裝什麼額外的東西才是。

另外，有的文章有提到，可刪除mail.plist之後重建。請問mail.plist是什麼，刪除之後，原本在mail裡的郵件，會不會遺失？

使用者目錄底下 --> Library --> Preference --> com.apple.mail.plist 丟到垃圾桶，清空

信件的備份在 Library --> Mail ，所以不會刪除

不曉得能不能解決問題就是了
