A friend of mine bought one of the Microsoft mobiles and gave me a demo. Quite impressive.
The phone itself looks okay. It has got a large colour screen with very high resolution. One can read PowerPoint slides with it. As a compensation, however, the keypad is quite small and not easy to type.
You can check your email on the mobile with Outlook. It also keeps a diary which you can synchronise with the one on your computer. That's not different from a PDA but people like my friend do not carry PDAs with them all the time, while they do carry the mobile phone.
You can also run MSN Messenger to chat with people -- using the small keyboard.
And the games. It did not come with many games but I guess new games may be downloaded. One can then imagine they can charge the user per download. Probably soon we will see people playing online first-person shooting games with mobile phones, and users would be charged per minute... this is gonna bring the telecom companies a FORTUNE...
When I thought about that I was a bit scared. Well, not just the "evil M$ taking over the world" thing, but the overwhelming consumerism or captialism..
Oh, BTW, the monthly rent is just 6 pounds for the first 6 months, with unlimited Internet access. But he expect the price to raise very quick after the 6 month promotion and he would start to get charged per second or per byte, etc. He said he would start to use it less after the promotion but I doubt he will soon get hooked...
