蘋果升級 X11！

今天，蘋果貼上了 0.2 版本的 X11 for Mac OS X public beta 供 X11-based 程式與 Mac OS X 的 native 程式使到 X11 為基礎的程式轉移至 Mac 的工作更為簡易。新版本也包括一些改進及修補，所有資料可在此獲得。

and ... "Installer now defaults to replacing /etc/X11, to use quartz-wm instead of twm. This is the only change since v0.2." 反正我都改好了，這個 update 大概是白下載了。

我很好奇什麼是移轉程式嘛....

X11.app 是個 X window 的伺服器。而 X window 軟體使用 X window 的協定把圖形界面的畫面交由 X window 的伺服器來負責顯示。在很多 Unix 的系統中 X window 的角色有點像 MacOSX 中 Aqua 的畫圖功能。

I still can't see this option inside the preference
Besides, it seems the default quartz-wm doesn't work for me, so i change to sawfish, which defined in .xinitrc file.
I don't know if that's the bug or my setup is incorrect.

你要檢查你的 ~/.xinitrc，看看最後一行是不是：

代碼: 選擇全部

exec quartz-wm

如果是別的 wm，就把它 comment 掉吧。

/etc/x11/xinit/xinitrc 是蘋果的設定。

Besides, it seems the default quartz-wm doesn't work for me, so i change to sawfish, which defined in .xinitrc file.

給其他人參考：
X11 啟動時，會先看 ~/ 有沒有 .xinitrc，如果沒有，才會去讀 /etc/x11/xinit/xinitrc，所以有很多人會說沒法子用 quartz-wm，都是因為 ~/ 有 .xinitrc，而且裡面用的是其他的 wm。

我是把原來的sawfish comment掉換上 quartz-wm
結果一執行X11時，只見xterm一閃而逝
直接從iTerm中執行xterm&
則馬上出現process done的message

不得已只好再回去用sawfish
雖然也很好看就是了

你有試過先把 .xinitrc 拿掉，用 /etc/x11/xinit/xinitrc 的啟動看看？

如果這樣沒問題，那就是你 .xinitrc 裡的其他設定在作怪了。

i copy xinitrc into my home directory and rename to .xinitrc
then try xterm &
the same phenomenon (xterm window just flashs away...)
however, for other x-app such as gvim or xeyes
they works fine

i doubt something wrong with my xterm setup
below is my xterm alias:

xterm:   aliased to xterm -geometry 100x36 -bg black -fg gray -j -sb -rightbar -sl 1000 &

but i don't think it matters

i just add the alias as above inside the .cshrc
besides, have tried the way you setup w/ and w/o my xterm configuration
the same result

幹嘛這麼麻煩還要打指令？這樣不就好了？

我照你這樣打也不會有問題說。除非你是在 Terminal.app 下這樣輸入，而且沒設 DISPLAY 變數，那就會發生 Can't Open Display 然後跳掉的問題。

詭異的是沒有任何error message
just said process is done

更詭異的是如果我不信邪死命的type xterm &
咦！
居然xterm就出現了
不過好歹也得try個五六次

請問有什麼其他的configuration file可以try and error？
