蘋果在今天發表了第一部使用 Mac OS X Server 系統的 1U 伺服器 XServe。這也是首部使用 DDR RAM 的麥金塔電腦。關於這部機器的詳細規格冰果室稍後將會有更多的報導。

This is probably the best product / solution for the enterprises that Apple has thrown in for years. Regardless what the hardware specs are, the partnerships with some of the biggest vendors, like Sybase, Oracle and HP kick ass already. The monitoring tool Apple bundles seems preliminary, but it's a start. I'm hoping to see some management software, like Concord SystemEdge to monitor the processes. I'll definitely put one on my rack.

Hrm... the press release didn't mention how HPOV is going to monitor the new XServe, but I guess MacOS X Server finally has supported SNMP agent for HPOV to poll. Not sure if it's using the standard host resource MIB or Apple's enterprise MIB though.

Apple has Enterprise server solution before (back in 1996)... they were running AIX 4.1.4 on their Network Server 500 & 700s:

They were ultrareliable, with redundant, hot-swappable hard drives, hot-swappable power supplies (as an option on the Network Server 700 only), hot-swappable fans, and parity memory.

yea, I remember that. [img]images/smiles/icon_smile.gif[/img] I think I actually saw some of them in action in a colo site in Santa Clara few years ago. Apple were using them to run some of their QT servers or something.

希望有備用power supply，因此是不是1U也無妨。Apple可像要推3U的（按Mac Central報導）

The 3U unit is a fibre channel RAID, not a server, and that's going to be awsome for some heavy-duty RDMS.

不太瞭解這台機器要如何跟一般的主機搭配使用
總不能只當file server吧？
有人可以幫忙講解一下嗎？

根據蘋果發佈的資料，AppleCare Service Parts Kits 包括了一片空白主機板、一個電源供應器、一個風扇、一個 Apple Drive Module (60GB or 120GB)。定價分別為美金 $999 (60GB HD) 跟 $1149 (120GB HD)。

基本上這還是一部 PowerMac，所以你原先可以在 PowerMac G4 上做的，這部機器都可以做。只不過大部份的人會拿來當 Daabase/web/file server。

And people like me will use it as a computational platform. But for floating point, it's too slow (even if I use altivec code)
