I have used 4D since 1991, but haven't got into any project seriously in the last 5 years! I am a member of Seattle dBUG (downtown Business Users Group) in the 4D sig (special interest group). If you have any question, I might be able to help find answers for you! Which version of 4D are you using? on Windows or MacOS 9/X? What do you use as database backend?

I am a physician in Taiwan. I use 4D to record the patient data for more than 10 years, Currently, there are more than 1000 patient record in my 4D database. My problem now is I need to put these data
on net for my assistants to input patient data in different locations in my hospital. The database is huge and important for me.
I use 4D 6.5 now and want to shift to 4D 2003.2 (mac)
if I can solve the problem.

is too expensive for me.

I don't know for sure, the stand-alone version of 4D might be up to the tasks you specified, but definitely 4D Server can be toggled to become a web server easily with multiple web access, you don't even have to change any code in your DB program!

4D is probably the most powerful database engine for PC (personal computing) in small enterprise class. Just compiled with correct runtime, it could be used in either Windows or Mac! Besides standalone databases, it also capable of using SyBase/Oracle/etc as it's database backend. You could also using middleware like WebStar/Lasso/etc to enhance your web serving functions. Version 6.5 is quite good but maybe lack some new functionalities that are in version 2003.2 (which just released LAST WEEK!). I don't know about you, but I would hold on to upgrades and see those pioneers (lab mouses like me) to iron out the unexpected features!

I guess 4D Inc. still does not accept credit cards that are outside of US origin! But You could just download the trial version of 2003.2 all-in-one from the web and try it, later if you like it, you could buy the license code and it become the full version without time limit. Don't worry about the information they requested, just check off whatever you don't want, such as news/letter/etc.
For all the references and help files, try here.
If you want to read books, I think you could try this page, especially the book by Steve Hussey, not too expensive and covers most your needs!
As for your web enabled application, check this page out. There're tips and brief descriptions for the 4D built-in web server.

From this FAQ: 4D v6 or later web serving capability makes serving database information to web browsers easier than with any other solution available. To understand 4D's web serving capability, you should consult the Web Serving chapter of the Language Reference Manual.

This might be the confusion you have! Usually we say 4D, is refer to the standalone SINGLE user 4D database, and 4D Server is for the database to be served on a SERVER machine, and MANY client machines with MANY USERS using networks to connect to the 4D SERVER for data and information management!
4D Server can serve your 4D database to multiple users at the same time while 4D standalone can serve your database to one user in the SAME machine at the same time (unless you turn on the web services, see above FAQ stuff)!

WEBSTAR - That's a different story...
WEBSTAR is an integration of many services, from web server, mail server, to database server and programming middleware,etc. Webstar can be used to pull data from many SQL-based databases (NOT NECESSARILY 4D databases ONLY). The web services in WEBSTAR is far more powerful and flexible than 4D web services. WEBSTAR was originally another company's product, and 4D (ACIUS then) bought and merge Webstar into the current 4D company!

You are "The One" who save me for 4D database in Taiwan.

Today I receive "The 4D Web Companion" which I order just few days ago. It cost me NT 6037 (including the tax hear and shipping).
It seemed I should try the "4d Semi-dynamic Tags" mode for creation the web. However, the problem remains: what 4D software should I need to set up my rational database in Mac machine,G3?
(The Dreamweaver will be used with 4D database in my plan)

May I have your Tel No and just call you for help for so many questions I have??
