I have a Canon S300, which has only USB, no FireWire. and Canon's software doesn't support OS later then 9.1

Maybe you can try to get the media (CompactFlash) to a card reader, then open it with any AVI compatiable applications. iMovie won't support any other I/O other than Firewire.
