Isolation is ordered for ex-chiefs
STAFF REPORTER
Two of the mainland's retired leaders have been quarantined along with their families after showing Sars
symptoms, informed sources said.
They said the news had prompted the People's Liberation Army's top tier to step up preventive measures
for themselves and their families.
Chi Haotian, defence minister until last month when he retired, and He Qizong, who served as a deputy chief
of staff in the early 1990s, have been isolated at a military hospital with their families.
It was unclear whether Mr Chi and Mr He had been diagnosed with Sars or merely placed under observation
after showing symptoms. Their family members have been put in isolation as precaution, sources said. Mr
Chi, 74, is the highest ranking government official, current or former to be isolated for Sars-related
symptoms since the outbreak started in Guangdong in November.
In Beijing, authorities have isolated nearly 9,000 people in their homes or in hospitals.
Jiang Zemin, chairman of the Central Military Commission, has ordered 1,200 medical workers to join the fight
on Sars in Beijing.
